The EU Data Act

The EU Data Act (Regulation (EU) 2023/2854) ensures that users of connected devices - such as smart home products - have access to the data generated by their use. The aim: more fairness, transparency and data sovereignty in Europe.

This regulation stipulates that manufacturers must provide data in an understandable, accessible and machine-readable form.

Homematic IP already meets many of these requirements today - with high standards of data protection and user-friendliness.

Measurement data as required

If you wish, you can activate the storage of measurement data in the app - for example for temperature, humidity or energy consumption. All data can be conveniently exported in CSV format, for example for evaluation in spreadsheet programs.

Cloud users:
Storage on servers in Germany, with the highest security standards.

Home Control Unit users:
All data remains locally on the device, if desired - for complete control and maximum privacy.

Machine-readable data

For advanced users, Homematic IP offers access to installation data in machine-readable JSON format. Simply generate a service token in the app and request it via support. After verification, the file is provided within a few working days.

What does the EU Data Act regulate for me as a user of Homematic IP?

The EU Data Act grants users of networked products the right to access the data generated through the use of these products. For you, this means that you can view the technical log and status data that your Homematic IP Access Point transmits to the cloud.

Where is my data stored?

Homematic IP offers two storage options, which you can choose from as desired:

Cloud storage in Germany

When operating via the Homematic IP Access Point, the necessary system and communication data is processed in encrypted form in a cloud infrastructure in Germany. Stored data is anonymised; personal information, except for the IP address, is not required for use. All communication is encrypted.

Local storage via the Home Control Unit (HCU)

With the Homematic IP Home Control Unit, central data such as automations, device statuses, profiles and configurations are stored entirely locally. After a one-time online commissioning, you can operate your smart home completely offline, so that control over the generated data remains in your own home.

Does the Data Act change anything in terms of data storage and anonymity?

No. The Data Act defines the rights to data access, but does not oblige manufacturers to collect additional data. The technical principle of anonymous use of the Homematic IP Cloud remains unchanged. The IP address continues to be stored and processed only in the encrypted form required to establish the technical connection.

How do I submit a request for data access?

As Homematic IP operates without personal user accounts or registration, it is technically impossible to assign your request based solely on an email address or name. To prove your authorisation as a user and ensure that data is only disclosed to the actual owner, you must provide the SGTIN (serial number) and the key for your access point. The request is made via the official contact form on the Homematic IP website.
