Together, NIBE and eQ-3 are making it possible to integrate NIBE S-Series heat pumps into Homematic IP Smart Home System. Connecting via the myUplink cloud enables several smart automation features designed to reduce energy consumption.

Automatically optimize the flow temperature based on demand

The correct flow temperature is a crucial factor for efficient heat pump operation. In practice, however, there is often not enough time to adjust the heat pump settings to perfectly match the specific circumstances.

eQ-3 and NIBE solve this problem by automatically optimizing the flow temperature. Homematic IP radiator thermostats or underfloor heating controllers detect the heat requirements of each room and dynamically adjust the heating water flow. If the devices detect that valve opening levels are consistently below the set point, the heat pump receives a command to lower the flow temperature.

This also works in reverse: If the setpoint temperature in one or more rooms is not reached over an extended period, the NIBE heat pump raises the flow temperature. In both cases, the degree of parallel shift can be set individually.

As a result, the interaction between room climate control and the heat pump ensures optimized system performance and maximum comfort without requiring significant manual adjustment.

Intelligent use of excess solar power

Another advantage of this integration is the optimal use of self-generated solar energy. In conjunction with the Homematic IP interface for smart meters, the system detects excess PV power and automatically uses it for heat storage.

For example, the domestic hot water tank can be heated specifically, or the temperature of selected rooms can be temporarily raised. In this way, self-generated solar energy—which would otherwise be fed into the grid—can be converted into heat and stored, for example, in the bathroom floor. The screed can release the heat overnight without the need for additional heating.

Automatic hydraulic balancing – greater efficiency for any heating system

Not just for NIBE heat pumps: A Homematic IP room climate control system increases the efficiency of the heating system through automatic hydraulic balancing. Homematic IP Radiator Thermostats and underfloor heating controllers are self-learning; they detect the actual heat demand of the rooms they serve and dynamically adjust the flow rate to the radiators or heating circuits. The effectiveness of this control system has been confirmed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology in independent studies.
