FAQs – your questions, our answers

In our FAQs, you will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions – in compact, comprehensible and concise form. Find out everything you need to know for optimum control of your smart home!

What is the Homematic IP Access Point and what is it needed for?

The Homematic IP Access Point is the central unit for your Homematic IP smart home system. Its main task is to establish a stable connection between all your Homematic IP devices, the free cloud and the intuitive app.

Without the Access Point, central control, configuration or retrieval of status information via the app would not be possible. It acts as an intelligent intermediary that receives commands from the app and forwards them securely to the respective devices.

How is the Homematic IP Access Point installed?

Commissioning is deliberately kept simple. First download the free Homematic IP app. Then connect the access point to your router using the network cable supplied and supply it with power via the power adapter; a distance of at least 50 cm from the Wi-Fi router is recommended.

Now use the app to scan the QR code on the back of the device. The access point automatically connects to the cloud. As soon as the LED on the device lights up blue continuously, confirm this in the app and briefly press the system button on the device for final confirmation.

What options does the Homematic IP Access Point offer for controlling my smart home?

The access point opens up a wide range of flexible control options. The primary method is the free Homematic IP app, which enables centralized setup and daily operation of all devices. Thanks to the connection to a free cloud, you can also control your home from anywhere in the world. The system is also compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing convenient voice control.

In addition, up to 15 users can access one installation and even manage multiple installations, for example for a main home and a vacation home, conveniently via the same app.

How can the wireless range of the Homematic IP system be extended?

The Homematic IP smart home system uses a particularly interference-free radio frequency band (868.0-868.6 MHz and 869.4-869.65 MHz) that does not interfere with typical WLAN, Bluetooth or DECT frequencies in the 2.4 GHz range. This achieves a very high wireless free-field range of up to 400 meters - ideal for stable communication even over longer distances.

For particularly large living areas, multi-storey buildings or areas that are difficult to access, the wireless range can be easily extended:

  • Additional Homematic IP Access Point: By integrating a second access point into the system (Advanced Routing), the coverage can be extended as required - ideal even for remote parts of buildings such as a garden shed.
  • Use of switch socket outlets: A Homematic IP switch or switch/measure socket outlet can also act as a wireless repeater, effectively extending the range in the home.
What security features does the Homematic IP Access Point offer?

Security and data protection have the highest priority. All communication between the devices, the app and the cloud is protected by comprehensive AES-128 encryption. The servers for the Homematic IP Cloud are located exclusively in Germany and are therefore subject to strict German data protection guidelines.

What is the "Duty Cycle" and how does it affect the function of the Homematic IP Access Point?

The "Duty Cycle" is a legal regulation that limits the transmission time of radio devices in the 868 MHz range to prevent overloading. For Homematic IP devices, this limit is 1% per hour (36 seconds transmission time). In everyday normal operation, this value is usually far from being reached.

Overloading can occur during initial installation, however, if many devices are taught at the same time and send more radio commands. This then leads to a temporary transmission pause of a maximum of one hour, after which the function is automatically restored.

How can the Homematic IP Access Point be reset to factory settings?

To reset only the access point, disconnect it from the power supply, press and hold the system button for 4 seconds when plugging it back in (LED flashes orange), release briefly and press it again for 4 seconds until the LED lights up green.

To permanently delete the entire installation, this process must be carried out twice within 5 minutes when the cloud connection is active (blue LED). After the first reset, wait for the blue LED and repeat the process. This requires a reinstallation of the app.
