Homematic IP is designed as a comprehensive smart home system and follows a clear principle. All components are optimally coordinated with one another and can be flexibly combined.

The system consists of three central components:

1. Access Point / Control Center

It reliably connects all components and ensures the smooth interaction of the entire smart home system—either via a secure cloud or operated entirely locally.

The free Homematic IP app guides you step by step through the setup process and makes the smart home system ready for immediate use in your daily life. Devices are clearly organized into rooms, groups, and automations, including secure access while on the go. Push notifications alert you to important events – Measurements such as temperatures and status indicators are clearly displayed in the app.

Server locations in Germany and the systematic avoidance of personal data protect your privacy—from installation through daily use. Communication between the app, the cloud, and devices is secured via AES-128 encryption and is complemented by a robust security concept to ensure that smart home functions remain reliably available. 

In addition, the VDE certification confirms tested protection mechanisms against unauthorized access—for reliable IT security in residential and commercial properties.

Connect API for flexible expandability

The Homematic IP Home Control Unit’s Connect API makes the smart home more open and flexible than ever before. The open interface offers developers and system integrators extensive possibilities to customize a Homematic IP installation to their individual requirements.

Plugins that run directly on the control unit or externally on the network enable the targeted expansion of the system with new functions. Local WebSocket communication ensures that all processes run quickly and securely.

Energy Management via EEBUS in the System

The Home Control Unit integrates energy management into the home automation system and establishes it as an integral part of the system logic. The EEBUS interface is designed to connect heat pumps, controlled residential ventilation systems, and electricity meters. This meets the requirements of Section 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG) and Section 9 of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). In addition, structured data paths enable monitoring and parameterization.
